Synthesizer tuition

Learn the principles of synthesis and sound design in London or online with The DAW Tutor – using analog hardware and virtual instruments.

Since the early 80s, synthesizers have dominated the music world and provided the soundtrack to our lives. Today, it is easier and more affordable than ever to get your hands on all the classic synths – recreated as software instruments that you can use inside your DAW.

Hardware synths have also surged in popularity again over the last decade, largely due to the affordability of Behringer products and some of the more established manufacturers offering modern interpretations of long-discontinued classics (e.g. Roland‘s Boutique range).

While it’s fun to mess around with presets, it helps to know what you’re doing if you want to get the most out of your synths. Our lead tutor and founder Alex Markham is an expert in synthesis, as well as being a skilled keyboard player and composer. He is passionate about synths and uses them extensively in his production work.

At The DAW Tutor, we begin by teaching you the fundamentals of subtractive synthesis using easy-to-understand virtual instruments. When you are confident in the basics, we move on to look at fabled classics such as the Minimoog and the Roland Jupiter-8.

If you are completely new to synthesis, we recommend Imaginando‘s DRC as your first synth. DRC offers an uncluttered, intuitive interface with a great sound engine – at an affordable price. A Roland Cloud subscription is recommended to all intermediate and advanced users.
